'Dons Win UTRGV Tournament Title After 4-3 OT Win Over Houston Baptist

EDINBURG, Texas – Blake Cearns found the back of the net with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime session to give the Mastodons a 4-3 victory over Houston Baptist on Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon. The game was played on UTRGV's campus.
The win gave the 'Dons the UTRGV Tournament Championship. Cearns, Matthew Lieshout, Romain Lopez and Andy O'Donoghue were named to the All-Tournament Team. Lieshout was named the Offensive Tournament MVP.
It was all 'Dons early with Lieshout scoring in the 26th and 29th minutes. His first goal came off a free kick and the second was a penalty kick score. Lieshout has five goals on the season.
Houston Baptist responded with three straight goals. Gianluca Natera scored in the 30th and 48th minutes. Dequan Thomas gave the Huskies the lead in the 53rd minute with a tally.
The 'Dons forced overtime with a goal by Zach Tom in the 81st minute. Tom heeled in a cross from Lopez for the goal. Tom now has two goals on the year.
A second overtime session was looming but in the final minute of the first overtime session, Cearns saw his first shot blocked but jumped on the rebound for the game-winning goal.
The Mastodons held a 20-16 advantage in shots. They also led 7-4 in corner kicks.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 3-1-0 while Houston Baptist is now 1-2-1.
The 'Dons are back in action on Friday (Sept. 7) at Northern Illinois.
