Mastodons Fall On The Road At Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 4-2 in a non-conference men's soccer match on Friday (Sept. 7) evening.
The Mastodons entered the contest as the nation's leader in goals on the season. The high scoring offense went to work with a pair of scores in the first 45 minutes.
Alex Frank tallied a goal in the 16th minute, assisted by Zach Tom and Adam Gannon. It was Frank's second goal of the season.
Five minutes later Tom scored a goal of his own when he finished a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
The two goals tied the game after the Huskies scored in the seventh and 13th minutes to grab a quick 2-0 lead.
The eventful first half stayed that way when the Huskies retook the lead six minutes after Tom's goal. Jan Maertins had the tally for the Huskies. The teams went to half with the Huskies leading 3-2.
Northern Illinois put the game away in the 80th minute on a goal by Nick Markanich. The tally came on only NIU's fourth shot of the second half.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-2. Northern Illinois improves to 3-2. The 'Dons return to action next Friday in a home contest with Bradley.
