The Mastodons are coming off of a 1-0 win over Green Bay on Tuesday night (Sept. 25). Matthew Lieshout scored off a header in the 77th minute. Romain Lopez added to his assist count after delivering the free kick to Lieshout. Lopez remains first in the Summit League with seven assists on the season. Reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week Tor Erik Larsen recorded five saves for his second shutout in three games.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS (1-5, 0-1 Summit):
The Mavericks are coming off of a close 4-3 loss to No. 4 Denver last Saturday (Sept. 22) in Omaha. Sophomore Diego Gutierrez scored the game's opening goal in the 30th minute. Gutierrez also earned an assist on the night off a corner kick, which Billy Hoffman headed into the back of the net. The Mavericks played down a man due to a red card for much of the contest. The Mavericks' one win on the season was a 2-0 victory over Utah Valley. They have non-league losses to UC Davis, Clemson, Missouri State and UCLA.
SERIES HISTORY:
The series is tied 3-3-1. Last season, the Mastodons tied the Mavericks 1-1 in double overtime on Sept. 30 in Omaha. The Mavericks were ranked No. 24 in the nation at the time. The last win for the Mastodons was on Nov. 1, 2014 in Fort Wayne with a score of 1-0.
EIGHT IS GREAT:
A day after earning the No. 8 spot in the first RPI rankings of the season, Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer turned to jersey number eight Matthew Lieshout for his eighth goal of the season in the win at Green Bay on Tuesday (Sept. 25).
IN THE NATION:
Tor Erik Larsen ranks second in the nation with 49 saves. Romain Lopez is fourth in the country with seven assists. Matthew Lieshout is fifth in the country in goals with eight.
MORE ON LOPEZ:
Romain Lopez' seven assists are tops in the Summit League. It also already has him tied for seventh all-time in program history for most assists in one season. One Mastodon he is tied with is his head coach. Mike Harper had seven assists in 1996. Next on the single-season list with eight assists is Harper, again, in 1995, as well as associate head coach Bronn Pfeiffer who had eight assists in 1986. The single-season record for assists is Juan Diaz. He had 12 in 1984.
MORE ON LIESHOUT:
Matthew Lieshout's eight goals hasn't cracked the top 10 in single season scoring yet, but it is the most goals by a 'Don in a season since Max Touloute had 13 in 2011.
UP NEXT:
Purdue Fort Wayne heads to Michigan on Tuesday (Oct. 2) for a non-conference match against Detroit Mercy. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. ET.
