‘Dons Down South Dakota State 104-88 For Fifth Straight Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons shot 57.1 percent from the floor in a 104-88 victory over South Dakota State on Thursday (Jan. 3) evening at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
John Konchar, fresh off his second consecutive Summit League Player of the Week honor, was one of five 'Dons in double-digits and one of three with 20 or more points. Konchar totaled 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. He was only 6-of-9 from the floor but connected on 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Kason Harrell shot 9-of-12 for 23 points and eight rebounds. Matt Holba made five 3-pointers to record 20 points. Marcus DeBerry added 15 points and Dylan Carl had 10.
The 'Dons never trailed after the seven-minute mark of the first half. A 10-3 push capped by a Konchar dunk and jumper put the 'Dons up 38-32 with 4:24 in the first. The 'Dons would lead 47-42 at the break.
Purdue Fort Wayne's first eight attempts in the second half were all 3-pointers. Six of them went in the basket. Matt Holba made three of them as the 'Dons took a 65-51 lead less than five minutes in to the second half. The hot shooting would continue as the 'Dons hit the 90-point mark with 8:34 left in the contest.
The Mastodons clinched the game with a 14-of-17 performance at the free throw line in the second half. The 'Dons took advantage of a four Jackrabbits finishing with four fouls.
South Dakota State's Mike Daum totaled 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting. Daum, the nation's leader in free throws, was only 5-of-6 from the line in the game.
The 'Dons move to 11-7 (3-0 Summit League). The last time the 'Dons started a season 3-0 was 2015-16, when Purdue Fort Wayne would go on to win the regular season league title.
South Dakota State falls to 11-6 (1-1 Summit League).
Purdue Fort Wayne has a week off before returning to the Coliseum on Thursday (Jan. 10) in a 7 p.m. tip against Oral Roberts.
