
Cross Country Travels to South Bend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne cross country will return to South Bend for the Joe Piane Invitational Friday (Oct. 4) afternoon hosted by Notre Dame. The Mastodons were at Notre Dame in 2018 and placed 13th for both men's and women's events. Both teams will be competing against future Horizon League foes Green Bay and Youngstown State.

Men's Preview (5 Mile)
The Mastodons are heading to the five-mile Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame on Friday, (Oct. 4) for the second year in a row. Last year, the men's cross country team came home with a 13th place finish and 372 points. All four of the returning 'Dons ran at the meet last year. Robert Peck finished in 86th (26:51.81), Sammy Moran came in 89th (26:58.63), Alex Barton ended in 96th place (27:32.68), and Austin Rockstroh came in 100th (27:51.79). Purdue Fort Wayne graduate Logan Kitchen led the way for the 'Dons with a 60th place finish (26:02.83). This is the team's first five-mile event of the season.
Women's Preview (5K)
Purdue Fort Wayne women's cross country will also head back to the Joe Piane Invitational for the 5K at Notre Dame. Last year, the 'Dons competed against 139 runners and finished in 13th with 304 points. Sophia Hirzel ran at Notre Dame last year and finished in 103rd palce and a time of 19:39.13. Graduate Emma Rafuse broke the 17 minute mark with a time of 16:58.87 and finished in 3rd place, less than eight seconds behind the winner. The 'Dons are running against Summit League opponent Omaha. Purdue Fort Wayne has not seen them since last year at the Summit League Cross Country Championships.

Up next for cross country will be the Evansville Invitational at the University of Evansville on October 19. The last time the 'Dons went to Evansville was in 2016 and both teams defeated Evansville in a head-to-head meet.
