'Dons Compete at NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne cross country will be participating in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin - Madison at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The men's team will be competing in their first 10K of the season and the women's cross country program will be running in the 6K event. Purdue Fort Wayne is the only Summit League team competing in the Great Lakes Regional.

MEN'S PREVIEW:
The Mastodons finished fiftth overall at the Summit League Championships presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare two weeks ago (Nov. 2). Junior Sammy Moran led the way for the Mastodons with a 24th overall finish and a career-best time of 26:16.9. Robert Peck finished up not far behind Moran in 31st place and a time of 26:52.5. Alex Barton (35th, 27:13.2), Husam Saleh (37th, 27:29.70), Draven Thompson (39th, 27:33.6) and Austin Rockstroh (40th, 27:40.8) ran their way into the Top 40 for the 'Dons. Peck, Moran, Barton and Rockstroh competed last year at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional 10K in Terre Haute, Ind. hosted by Indiana State University. Moran finished with a personal best time of 34:02.7 and placed 149th. Barton placed 157th and had a time of 34:12.8. Peck rounded out the Purdue Fort Wayne top five thanks to a personal-best time of 34:27.1 for 164th. Rockstroh finished up the Mastodon pack with a time of 35:59.6.

The field consists of Akron, Bowling Green, Butler, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Michigan, Evansville, Indiana, IUPUI, Kent State, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oakland, Ohio, Ohio State, Purdue, Purdue Fort Wayne, Toledo, Valparaiso, Wis.-Green Bay, Wis.-Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Wright State, Xavier (Ohio), and Youngstown State.
WOMEN'S PREVIEW:
Purdue Fort Wayne women's cross country is coming off of a seventh place finish at the Summit League Championship (Nov. 2). It was the first time the 'Dons ran a 6K all season. Freshman Kathy Potter finished first for Purdue Fort Wayne in 37th place and a PR time of 23:31.3. Sophia Hirzel was not far behind and finished in 40th (23:48.4). Makaila Groves (45th, 24:11.6), Elana Kayser (60th, 25:25.6), Kenzie Smith (61st, 25:27.5) and Lauren Morales (67th, 28:57.1) finished up for the Mastodons. Hirzel will be returning to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional after placing 189th and a time of 24:07.6.
