Purdue Fort Wayne to Play in NIVC Opener vs. Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball is set to compete in its first National Invitational Volleyball Championship on Thursday (Dec. 5), when the Mastodons visit Bowling Green at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Falcons
Bowling Green is coming off a season where they were picked to finish second in the MAC, and the Falcons did just that. They went 11-5 in the conference and went to the MAC Tournament championship match, where they fell to Ball State 3-2. The Falcons are led by Katelyn Meyer and Isabelle Marciniak, who were both named to the MAC All-Tournament Team. Meyer is averaging 3.74 kills per set, and Marciniak is pacing the offense with 1071 assists for a .212 team hitting percentage.
Postseason Volleyball!
This season, Purdue Fort Wayne earned its first berth to a non-league postseason tournament for the first time since 2012, when the Mastodons earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after beating IUPUI in the championship match of the Summit League Tournament. The 'Dons dropped their first-round matchup with No. 18 Iowa State in five sets. The 2019 Mastodons earned an at-large bid to the NIVC after falling to Denver in the League tournament semifinal. The 'Dons play Bowling Green in the first round. The winner of that contest will play the winner of TCU and Miami (OH).
The NIVC
The NIVC dates back to 1989, when the first tournament was held, but was discontinued after 1995. It was then rebooted in 2017. As such, this will be the third edition of the tournament since its revival. Ole Miss won the 2017 tournament, and Iowa State is the reigning champion.
Nearing 1,000...
Junior Katie Crowe is looking to become the 10th Mastodon in program history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for her career at Purdue Fort Wayne. She has 942 kills and 1,011 digs heading into the NIVC.

The last regular season match came in 2016, when Bowling Green took a 3-0 win on its home floor. The Mastodons' last win over the Falcons came in 2014, when the 'Dons defeated Bowling Green 3-0 at Wright State in the Flyer-Raider Invitational.
All-League Honors
Katie Crowe was the only Mastodon selected to the All-Summit League Team this season, but Sydney Boerst and Rachael Crucis earned Honorable Mention distinction. Crucis and Sidney Schiller earned places on the Summit League All-Freshman Team.
Diggin' Up Everything
After the conclusion of the regular season, Rachael Crucis led the Summit League with 535 total digs. She was ahead of South Dakota's Anne Rasmussen who has earned seven Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honors. Crucis is also second in the League in digs per set for the season.
On the Double... Double!
Katie Crowe has 35 double-doubles in her career with the Mastodons, 16 of which have come this season. Of the 34, 19 of them came on Arnie Ball Court.
Hittin' High
Sydney Boerst currently ranks second in program history in career hitting percentage at .325. She is the leader in the rally scoring era (2001-present), and only trails Andi Reichart (.362) overall. She is hitting .349 this season.
Blocking Your Way to the Top
Sydney Boerst also ranks in the top 10 in program history in blocks per set with 0.94 for her career. She is tied with Natalie Seiler at sixth, who also averaged 0.94 in her career from 2014-17. Boerst is behind three Mastodons that averaged 0.96, who are at third, fourth and fifth in program history.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to Denver 3-1 in the Summit League Championship semifinal after defeating Oral Roberts in the opening round 3-1. Sydney Boerst was named the Summit League All-Tournament after she recorded 15 blocks in the two matches.

If the Mastodons win the opening round match at Bowling Green, they will play the winner of TCU and Miami (OH). That game will be played on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Stroh Center at Bowling Green.
