Smalarz and Haas Homer as 'Dons Earn Split

Lacey Wilzbacher finished the day hitting .500, going 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBIs. Alise Hale also collected three hits. Rachel Everson, Lexi Smalarz, and Abby Baez each finished with two hits, as Smalarz also drove in three runs.
In the first game of the day, UNI scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly. The Mastodons answered back in the bottom of the second when Wilzbacher doubled to left center, scoring two runs. Smalarz stepped in next, and on the sixth pitch of her at-bat, she delivered on the first home run of her career, a 3-run blast to left center.
The Panthers tacked on a run in the third on another sacrifice fly. The 'Dons added a run on an RBI single by Lauren Watson in the fourth. Purdue Fort Wayne capped off its scoring on a two-run double by Wilzbacher in the fifth.
Shaina Eyre earned the complete game victory, earning her first win of the season. She scattered 10 hits while allowing two runs and striking out five.
Game two saw Samford take the lead in the second on an RBI single. The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third on a three-run home run, before pushing across one more run in the sixth.
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Watson stole second, and then came all the way around to score when the catcher's throw sailed into centerfield. Ashley Haas made her first collegiate hit a memorable one when she pinch-hit in the top of the sixth. Haas deposited a 1-1 pitch over the center field wall, for her first career hit.
Lauren McConnell suffered the loss, falling to 3-3 on the season. She tossed 4 2-3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out three. Alyssa Malicki came on for the final 1 1-3, surrendering one run on two hits and recording a strikeout.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, March 11, with a rematch against UNI at 10 a.m. ET, followed by a matchup with host Murray State at 2:30 p.m. ET.
