NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped its opening game of the Belmont Invitational, as the Mastodons fell to the host Bruins 8-1 Friday afternoon (March 15).

Alise Hale, Lauren Watson, and Rachel Everson all finished 2-for-3 on the day for the 'Dons. Hale collected a pair of doubles and an RBI. Lacey Wilzbacher also had two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double.

Belmont went out in front after scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. The Bruins added a run in the fourth and the fifth, before scoring four runs in the sixth.

Purdue Fort Wayne's run came in the top of the third. Everson reached on an infield single, and then Hale followed with a double to the right-center gap, scoring Everson all the way from first. The Mastodons loaded the bases in the first and seventh innings, but were unable to push across a run.

Shaina Eyre took the loss in four innings of work. She allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three. Lauren McConnell came on to pitch the final two innings in relief.

Day two of the Belmont Invitational will see Purdue Fort Wayne take on UIC at 11 a.m. ET, followed by Lipscomb at 1:15 p.m. ET.
