Mastodons Drop Twin Bill at Belmont Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a twin bill during day two of the Belmont Invitational as the Mastodons fell to UIC 10-3 and Lipscomb 6-0.
The 'Dons fell behind in the first when UIC plated nine runs on only one hit in the top half of the inning. Relief pitcher Alyssa Malicki limited the Flames to one run after the first inning, which came in the third.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored twice in the bottom of the second. Sydney Windlan delivered an RBI single up the middle that scored Rachel Everson. Windlan was thrown out trying to steal second, but it did allow Brooke Imel to score from third. The Mastodons added their final run in the fifth when Morganne Denny led off the inning with a pinch-hit solo home run, her second of the season.
Lauren McConnell took the loss as the starting pitcher. Malicki came on to pitch the final 6 2-3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.
Game two had Lipscomb jump out to the early lead, scoring a run in the first and the second. The Bisons later added four runs in the fifth. The Mastodons broke up the no-hit bid in the seventh when Lacey Wilzbacher led off the inning with a single up the middle. Alise Hale followed with a single to left to put runners on first and second, but the 'Dons were unable to push a run across.
Shaina Eyre suffered the complete game loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits and recording three strikeouts.
Purdue Fort Wayne wraps up the Belmont Invitational tomorrow, March 17, when the Mastodons take on Lipscomb at 12:15 p.m. ET followed by Belmont at 2:30 p.m. ET.
