Softball Drops Summit League Opener to NDSU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team opened Summit League play Saturday (March 23), but the Mastodons were unable to knock off the defending league champions North Dakota State, as the 'Dons fell 11-1 and 5-0.
Game one saw NDSU connect on a three-run homer in the second to get the scoring started. The Bison added three runs in the third, one in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
The Mastodons scored their run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Lauren Watson reached on an infield single to break up the no-hitter. Lacey Wilzbacher followed with a double to the right-center gap, scoring Watson from second.
Shaina Eyre took the loss as she threw a complete game striking out three.
The second game of the day had the Bison scoring runs in each of the first two innings, before adding one in the fourth and two in the seventh.
Purdue Fort Wayne was limited to two hits in the game. Alise Hale singled with two outs in the first, and Wilzbacher led off the fourth with a single to left center.
Alyssa Malicki suffered the complete game loss as she scattered five hits with three strikeouts.
The two teams wrap up their Summit League series tomorrow, March 24, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
