FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A cold, drizzly day at Mastodon Field saw South Dakota State take a pair of contests from Purdue Fort Wayne baseball. The 'Dons fell 5-4 in game one and 12-2 in game two on Friday (March 29).
Game One – South Dakota State 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 4
The 'Dons took the lead 2-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Robert Young III singled in Brandon Yoho who singled to center to start the inning to tie the game at one. A Travis Upp fielder's choice knocked in Andrew Lawvere for the second run.
SDSU took the lead back with two in the fifth. They added another in the seventh to make the score 4-2. Purdue Fort Wayne knotted it back at four thanks to two runs in the seventh. The two-run seventh started with a one-out single by Jack Lang. He stole second and then went to third on a Trenton Stoner single. Alec Brunson knocked in Long with a single. Stoner then scored on a bases loaded walk by Lawvere.
In the top of the eighth, an error put the leadoff runner on for SDSU. He would come around for the eventual game winning-run.
The 'Dons threatened in the final two innings looking for the equalizer. But a pair of walks were stranded in the eighth and then a Garrett Mohler walk in the ninth was stranded to end the game.
Cameron Boyd earned a no decision. He allowed four runs (two earned) in 7.0 innings of work. Tyler Kissinger took the loss for the 'Dons. He is 1-2. He didn't allow an earned run in his 2.0 innings of work. Bret Barnett received the win for the Jackrabbits in relief. He is 4-0. Drew Beazley threw the final three outs for his third save of the year.
Game Two – South Dakota State 12, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
Lawvere hit a solo home run for the 'Dons in the second inning. He now has five on the season. It made the score a 5-1 game. Purdue Fort Wayne's second run came in the fourth. Young doubled and scored on an Aaron Chapman RBI single. That made the score 7-2. SDSU took control of the game for good with a single run in the fifth and sixth before adding three in the seventh.
Chase Phelps is 1-5. He threw 6.0 innings and received the loss. Jackrabbit starter Ryan Froom tossed 6.0 innings to receive the win.
Offensively, Nick Smith scored three times for SDSU in game two.
