Wilzbacher Goes Four for Five as 'Dons Fall to Coyotes

VERMILLION, S.D. - Lacey Wilzbacher went 4-for-5 in a Purdue Fort Wayne softball doubleheader, but the Mastodons were unable to pick up a road win as they fell to South Dakota 7-0 and 10-0.
Wilzbacher was near perfect at the plate as she recorded four hits and a sacrifice bunt. She was 3-for-3 in game one, and recorded the Mastodons' lone hit in game two. Lauren Watson added a pair of hits in the first game.
South Dakota opened the game scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. The Coyotes would add a run in the fourth and fifth, and then three in the sixth. The Mastodons nearly matched the Yotes with seven hits in the game. The 'Dons put a runner on in six of the seven innings, with the best opportunity coming in the fourth when they put runners on first and second with one out. They Mastodons again put runners on first and second in the top of the fifth before the final two outs were recorded.
Shaina Eyre took the loss as she tossed a complete game, scattering eight hits as she struck out two.
The Mastodons were limited to two base runners in game two as Wilzbacher singled to left in the first and Rachel Everson walked in the fourth.
South Dakota scored two runs in the first, one in the third and then seven in the fourth. Lauren McConnell threw a complete game, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
The two teams wrap up their Summit League series tomorrow, March 31, at noon ET.
