INDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a non-league game on Thursday (April 11), as the Mastodons fell 3-2 at Butler.
Lauren Watson was the only player for either team to earn two hits on the afternoon, and the only extra base hit, a double. Ashley Haas had a hit and an RBI, while Brooke Imel had the other Mastodon hit.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored first in the top of the second. Abby Baez led off the inning with a walk, before a sacrifice bunt moved her to second. Imel reached on a bunt single, but the throw by the Butler pitcher found no one covering first base, allowing Baez to score easily.
Butler tied the game in the fourth before pushing across two runs in the fifth to take the lead. In the sixth, the 'Dons got a run back when Watson led off by hitting a line drive off the pitcher's glove. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored when Haas singled through the right side. Haas would represent the tying run, but the Mastodons were unable to bring her home. The 'Dons would have one final shot in the seventh as Sydney Windlan drew a leadoff walk, but the next three batters were retired to end the game.
Lauren McConnell started in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne as she threw four innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out four. Alyssa Malicki took the loss as she toss one inning in relief and allowed two runs on one hit. Shaina Eyre came on for the final inning and surrendered one hit.
Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Omaha for a three-game series beginning tomorrow, April 12, with an approximate start time of 6:30 p.m.
