Watson Notches Four Hits In Doubleheader At SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Lauren Watson had four hits on the day, but Purdue Fort Wayne softball dropped a Summit League doubleheader at South Dakota State on Saturday (April 20) by scores of 10-6 and 5-2.
Game One
The 'Dons took a 3-1 lead with a three-spot in the third inning. Alise Hale knocked in the first run with a bases loaded walk and then Rachel Everson singled in a pair.
SDSU responded with three in the third and three more in the fourth. The 'Dons got within two at 7-5 thanks to two runs in the top of the fifth. Morganne Denny and Everson had RBI in the frame. But the Jackrabbits put the game away with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Hale closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh.
Denny and Everson each had two hits in the game. Hale added two walks to her home run in game one.
Shaina Eyre suffered the loss for the 'Dons. Kendra Conrad had the win and Taylor Compton recorded the save.
Game Two
The Mastodons scored a pair in the second. Lexi Smalarz singled in Brooke Imel and then Smalarz came around on a Lauren Watson single.
SDSU answered in the bottom of the second with two runs to tie the game. The Jacks added two more in the third and one in the fifth.
The Mastodons had 10 hits in the game. Watson cracked out three hits and is now hitting .338 on the season. Hale and Denny each had a single and a double.
Lauren McConnell went 6.0 innings. She suffered the loss. Emma Hardin earned the win for SDSU. The two clubs will close out the series on Sunday.
