MACOMB, Ill. – A pair of one-run decisions went in the favor of the home standing Western Illinois Leathernecks on Friday (April 26) as the Purdue Fort Wayne softball team lost 3-2 in game one and 5-4 in the nightcap.
Game One
The Mastodons took a 2-1 lead in the third with a pair of runs. Lauren Watson singled in Brooke Imel for the first run. Camryn Mosher then came around on an error. WIU responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. It would stay a 3-2 score the rest of the way. The 'Dons opened the seventh with a walk by Lacey Wilzbacher but three straight fly outs ended the game.
Imel finished with two hits in the game. Alyssa Malicki didn't give up an earned run but took the loss. Emily Ira earned the win for WIU with a complete game.
Game Two
The 'Dons were down 3-1 entering the seventh inning. Imel opened the inning with a bunt single. Rachel Everson pinch hit and responded with a one-out single. Lexi Smalarz took one pitch to lay a sacrifice bunt down. The sacrifice worked to perfection as Lauren Watson took the first pitch she saw to right center and score a pair. Her hit tied the game at three. Watson moved to second on WIU's throw home and the decision paid off when Wilzbacher doubled in Watson to make the score 4-3.
However the 'Dons couldn't hold the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Halle Hollatz tied the game with a one-out single and then Aly Compton won the game for WIU with a two-out single.
Abby Carlin earned the win for WIU. Shaina Eyre suffered the loss.
WIU moves to 16-19 (8-6 Summit League). The 'Dons fall to 8-35 (3-14 Summit League).
The 'Dons and WIU will close out the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
