South Dakota State Edges ‘Dons Late

BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State scored three times late to break a four-all seventh-inning tie and defeat the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team 7-4.
The 'Dons tied the game at four with a single run in the top of the seventh. Trenton Stoner walked to open the inning. Austin Wilkie pinch ran for Stoner and stole second. Wilkie then came around on a passed ball.
Gus Steiger flew out in the bottom of the seventh to score Landon Badger to make the score 5-4. It would be the winning run before the Jackrabbits scored two insurance runs in the eighth inning.
South Dakota State scored two in the first and two more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The 'Dons put one on the board in the third on a Brandon Yoho double that scored Travis Upp. In the fourth Jacob Dickson knocked a home run with Aaron Chapman on first to make the score 4-3.
Chase Phelps threw 5.1 innings in relief. He allowed three runs and suffered the loss. Bret Barnett tossed the final 2.2 innings to get the win for South Dakota State.
South Dakota State improves to 23-17 (15-8 Summit League). The 'Dons fall to 5-38 (0-23 Summit League). The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday.
