'Dons Sweep Crusaders 3-0 Over Opening Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 14 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team swept the Belmont Abbey Crusaders 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 27-25) Saturday afternoon (Jan. 11) on the Arnie Ball Court. Troy Gooch led the Mastodons defensively with a career-high 12 digs.
In set one, the Mastodons took the lead early 3-1. Wilmer Hernandez earned himself a .700 hitting percentage with seven kills. Jon Diedrich helped with five kills and Frederico Santos contributed 11 assists to allow the 'Dons to take set one.
The 'Dons had a five-point run at the end of set two to take it 25-17. Purdue Fort Wayne remained strong and held the Crusaders to a .125 hitting percentage while the 'Dons had .474. Frederico Santos, Richie Diedrich and Hernandez rejected the Crusaders and had the only block in the set.
Belmont Abbey remained close to go into extra points, but the Mastodons held their own with 19 kills in set three. Jon Diedrich contributed eight more kills and Hernandez had five. Santos had 16 assists to keep the 'Dons offense strong.
The Mastodons ended the match with a hitting percentage of .441 while holding Belmont Abbey to .290. Jon Diedrich finished the match with 20 kills and Hernandez finished with 15. Santos made his mark with a double-double, 39 assists and 10 digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne ends opening weekend with a 2-0 record while Belmont Abbey falls to 1-2. The Mastodons will head out west to face off against No. 5 UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday (Jan. 15) at 10 p.m. and No. 13 CSUN on Friday (Jan. 17) at 10 p.m.
