SCOUTING CSUN
The Matadors are coming into the week 1-2 overall. Most recently, CSUN came out with a 3-0 victory against Benedictine University at Mesa on Jan. 11. Shortly before facing off against the Redhawks, the Matadors fell to Concordia 3-2 on Jan. 10 and McKendree 3-2 on Jan. 9. The Matadors are receiving votes in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll.
SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos hosted the UCSB Invitational from Jan. 9-11. UC Santa Barbara swept the tournament winning all three matches 3-0. They played Concordia (Calif.), Benedictine University at Mesa and McKendree.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME AGAINST CSUN?
The Mastodons met with the Matadors last year on Jan. 18. CSUN ended up taking home a victory 3-2. Pelegrin Vargas led for the Mastodons in kills with 23 and a .400 hitting percentage.
GAUCHOS VS. 'DONS
UC Santa Barbara overpowered the Mastodons 3-1 last year on Jan. 19. Thensenior Colton Stone tallied 14 kills and two aces while Pelegrin Vargas had 13 kills and three blocks.
COACHING GOALS
Ryan "Rock" Perrotte is in his fifth season as the head coach for the Mastodons and his 17th season overall. Perrotte was named the head coach of Team USA for the World University Games held in Napoli, Italy over the summer. He has been a part of the USA Volleyball's High Performance system for nearly a decade and has coached at many High Performance Championships at A3, A2 and A1 summer camps.
MAKIN' A NAME
Jon Diedrich played in his first collegiate match against the Queens Royals on Jan. 10 and tallied 28 kills in four sets, the most a freshman has had in his first match during the rally scoring era for the 'Dons.
IN THE TOP 15
Purdue Fort Wayne is in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll this week, coming in at No. 10. This is the highest the Mastodons have been ranked since 2015. The 'Dons have been ranked in the poll for 307 weeks since its inception in 1986.
ELITE MASTODONS
The Mastodons have been stellar against opponents outside of the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll since April 1, 2017. The 'Dons are 33-2 against unranked teams since that date.
LAST TIME OUT
Purdue Fort Wayne faced off against Belmont Abbey on Saturday (Jan. 10) where they swept the Crusaders 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 27-25). Troy Gooch had a careerhigh 12 digs and nine assists.
NEXT TIME UP
The Mastodons will head out to the east coast to take on NJIT on Thursday (Jan. 23) and No. 13 George Mason on Saturday (Jan. 25). Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
