NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - In his first match back in the lineup after playing in an Olympic qualification tournament with Puerto Rico, senior Pelegrin Vargas had 22 kills to lead No. 10 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) win over (RV) CSUN in the Matadome.
This was the first-ever win for the Mastodons on CSUN's home floor, as the visitors hit .357 on the night. Vargas hit .588 (22-2-34) on his own. Purdue Fort Wayne is now 34-2 over the last 36 matches against unranked teams.
Purdue Fort Wayne came out hot from the opening serve, going up 10-6 after a 4-0 run. Tomas Gago, Wilmer Hernandez and Jon Diedrich picked up kills in this run, and Diedrich combined with his older brother Richie Diedrich to block a Matador attack. The lead ballooned to six at 22-16 after Frederico Santos picked up a kill. CSUN closed the gap to three, but Vargas had a kill, and Santos and Gago combined for the block that ended the set. This was one of Vargas' six kills in just seven attacks in the opening frame. The 'Dons held CSUN to the lowest hitting percentage of the night in the first set at .192.
There were 11 ties and a pair of lead changes in the second set, as CSUN took a lead early on. After the Matadors led 15-12, Vargas took over to lead a 6-0 run to give the 'Dons the lead that CSUN would not take back. He had two aces and a back-row kill in the run. The home team pulled to an even score a few more times in the set, but a 3-1 run ended the set. Vargas had two of his eight second-set kills, while Gago and Santos combined for a block.
The third set was the most closely contested of the night, as there were 16 ties and five lead changes. The 'Dons went up 6-3 as Vargas had three kills early. The Matadors went on a push that gave them the lead for a large portion of the third frame. They even had a set point opportunity at 24-23, but the Mastodons staved off the try as Hernandez found the floor, R. Diedrich had a solo block, and his brother had the match-winning kill.
Santos paced the offense with 40 assists to move his nation-leading average to 13.60 per set. Troy Gooch had a match-high eight digs.
The 10th-ranked Mastodons are now 3-0, while CSUN falls to 1-3. Purdue Fort Wayne will have a chance at a signature win in two days, as the 'Dons will visit No. 4 UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are also 3-0, and have not lost a set this season.
