No. 4 UCSB Offense Too Much for No. 10 Mastodons

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 4 UC Santa Barbara's offense was clicking on all cylinders on Friday night (Jan. 17), as No. 10 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball fell to the Gauchos 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) in Rob Gym.
The Gauchos hit .514 for the match, and that was the path to their fourth win of the season. In the opening frame, Purdue Fort Wayne held tight with UCSB, as Tomas Gago had three kills in a row to bring the score to an 8-8 draw. The Gauchos went on a 7-1 run to go up 22-14 and put the set out of reach. Gago had five of his nine kills in the first set.
The second set was more of the same with UC Santa Barbara's offense, as the Gauchos hit a match-low .450. The Mastodons led 8-5 early after a 4-0 spurt that Pelegrin Vargas led, banging home two aces. UCSB had a 7-1 run that gave the Gauchos the lead for good. They also ended the set on a second 7-1 run. Vargas had three kills and two aces in the set.
UCSB had its best offensive set in the third, with 18 kills and a .571 hitting clip. The Mastodons did as well, as they hit .310. The set was tied at 13-13, but the Gauchos went on a 7-2 run that kept Purdue Fort Wayne at bay. Despite Vargas' five kills on seven swings, the 'Dons could not scrape back into the five-point deficit.
Vargas finished the night with a match-high 12 kills on a .500 hitting clip. He also had the most digs on the floor with eight.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 3-1, while UC Santa Barbara improves to 4-0. The Mastodons will play again on Thursday, January 23, when they travel to NJIT.
