Scouting Lindenwood
The Lions are kicking off MIVA play on Thursday (Feb. 13) against the Mastodons after coming off of a 3-2 win against CSUN on Saturday (Feb. 8). They recorded 19 blocks and tied for 10th most blocks in program history. A.J. Lewis was the top scorer for the Lions with 17 kills and two aces. Sam Schindler led the way with a .529 attack percentage.
Scouting Quincy
The Quincy Eagles are coming into match play after a 3-1 victory against Culver-Stockton. Omari Wheeler tallied a career-high 26 kills and Noam Hannoun had 25 kills. Yoran Raymaekers recorded 44 assists in four sets. The Hawks will play the Loyola Ramblers on Thursday (Feb. 13) as they begin MIVA play.
Lions vs. 'Dons
The Mastodons and Lions are going head-to-head for the first time since Purdue Fort Wayne won its MIVA quarterfinal match last year 3-0. Four Mastodons had at least six digs: Tony Price (6), Pelegrin Vargas (7), Kolbie Knorr (7) and Colton Stone (9). Stone finished with three aces, moving him into 10th place in program history in career aces with 99. This was the first MIVA Tournament win for the Mastodons since 2014.
Hawks vs. 'Dons
Last time the 'Dons and Hawks met was in March 2019. Purdue Fort Wayne walked away with a 3-0 win. Pelegrin Vargas, Alex Dickmann and Tony Price each did a bit of everything in Pepsi Arena. Vargas had 12 kills with a .429 percentage and six digs. Dickmann had 11 kills on .529 hitting, seven digs and two aces. Price had nine kills, five digs and an ace.
Nothin' But Awards
Pelegrin Vargas took home his fifth-career MIVA Offensive Player of the Week award on Tuesday, January 28, for the second consecutive week. Vargas earned 31 kills against NJIT and George Mason. Against George Mason, he had 20 kills (5.00 per set) with a hitting percentage of .386. While the Mastodons dropped their match at NJIT on Thursday (Jan. 23), Vargas led the team with 11 kills in three sets (3.67 per set). Vargas finished the week averaging 4.43 kills per set and a .278 hitting percentage.
In the Top 15
Purdue Fort Wayne is in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll this week, coming in at No. 9. The 'Dons have been ranked in the poll for 311 weeks since its inception in 1986.
Elite Mastodons
The Mastodons have been stellar against opponents outside of the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll since April 1, 2017. The 'Dons are 36-3 against unranked teams since that date.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne swept Loyola 3-0 on Saturday (Feb. 8) in the Gentile Arena in the MIVA Opener. This is the first time Purdue Fort Wayne has beaten Loyola since 2013 and the first time in three sets since 2007. Pelegrin Vargas tallied 19 kills, while Tomas Gago collected 10 and Jon Diedrich had eight. Wilmer Hernandez totaled a career-high six digs, two aces and three blocks. Frederico Santos had 39 assists and four digs.
Next Time Up
The Mastodons will return to Arnie Ball Court on Friday (Feb. 21) for a matchup against Ball State at 7 p.m. ET. Purdue Fort Wayne will also play Ohio State on Saturday (Feb. 22) at home at 7 p.m. ET.
