Lindenwood's Offense Too Much As 'Dons Fall 3-1

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - No. 9 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball couldn't stop Lindenwood's offense and fell 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23) at Hyland Arena on Thursday (Feb. 13).
1st Set
Jon Diedrich started the first set with a kill, but the Lions went on a three point scoring run to take the lead 3-1. The Mastodons caught back up after two errors by Lindenwood and a kill by Pelegrin Vargas to tie up the score at five. Lindenwood earned some breathing room and led 24-19 when the 'Dons rattled off four straight points to make the score 24-23. Vargas had a kill and a block in the run. However the set went to the Lions on a kill by Jeremy Kirch for point 25.
2nd Set
In set two, the Lions led the way in the beginning, but the Mastodons came back to tie it at 11. Vargas and Jon Diedrich helped the 'Dons take back control and advance the lead to 17-13. Carlos Mercado came into the match and got his first collegiate kill, allowing the Mastodons to go up 22-18. Vargas closed down set two with a kill and tied up the match 1-1.
3rd Set
Set three was close to start until Lindenwood earned their first three-point lead of the frame at 11-8. The 'Dons would rally back to tie it first at 18 and then 20 on a kill by Tomas Gago. A Lindenwood kill, ace and kill followed to put the Lions in control at 23-20.
4th Set
Frederico Santos shook up the Lions' defense as he dumped the ball behind the blockers and put Purdue Fort Wayne ahead 8-3. A fifth set looked imminent with the 'Dons up 21-16. Things flipped toward the Lions as four straight points by Lindenwood followed. While a Richie Diedrich kill briefly halted Lindenwood's momentum to keep the Mastodons' lead at 22-20, the Lions followed with a 5-1 run to close out the set and the match.
