Vargas Earns 500th Dig After 3-1 Win Over Ohio State

FORT WAYNE, Ind - After a slow start, the No. 14 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team beat Ohio State 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17) on Saturday (Feb. 22) on Arnie Ball Court. Pelegrin Vargas earned his 500th career dig during the match.
1st Set
The Mastodons started the match with a 4-0 run, but the Buckeyes retaliated with their own 4-0 run. Ohio State took a 22-16 lead after a Mastodon service error and a four-point run that included two service aces by Martin Lallemand. Both offenses were working, with both over a .390 percentage, but Purdue Fort Wayne struggled at the service line with six errors. The Buckeyes took set one 25-19.
2nd Set
It was back-and-forth most of set two, but with Ohio State leading a majority of the way. The Mastodons came back with two kills by Jon Diedrich and Tomas Gago and a bad set by the Buckeyes, tying it up at 18. Ohio State pulled away one more time, but Purdue Fort Wayne's offense came back with an ace and a block by Richie Diedrich and Jon Diedrich to even up the score once again at 22. The Diedrich brothers came back with another block and Carlos Mercado had a kill to end the set with a win 25-23. The 'Dons had a 6-1 run to end the set.
3rd Set
Ohio State once again held an early edge, but an ace by Vargas advanced the Mastodons to a 16-14 lead. The 'Dons took control late in set three after the Buckeyes had a service error and an attack error. Vargas closed out the set after a kill between the Ohio State blockers with a score of 25-20. The 'Dons recorded a .355 hitting percentage, keeping the Buckeyes below. 250.
4th Set
Purdue Fort Wayne led wire-to-wire in set four. Late in the set, the 'Dons elevated their lead to 22-14 after five straight. Richie Diedrich, Jon Diedrich and Carlos Mercado rejected the Buckeye offense and helped the Mastodons keep their lead. At the end, Gago finished off the set with a kill and the only block solo for the Mastodons. Purdue Fort Wayne finished the final set with a .381 hitting and 11 kills.
