FORT WAYNE, Ind. - No. 14 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball fell to No. 5 Lewis on Thursday (Feb. 27) at Arnie Ball Court 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17). The Lewis Flyers were the first top-five team the Mastodons have played since No. 3 UC Santa Barbara on January 17.
Set One
The Flyers began set one with a five-point run. Lewis held the Mastodons to -.033 hitting. Jon Diedrich led the way with three kills and two digs, hitting .375.
Set Two
The Mastodons tried to make a comeback in set two, but couldn't maintain momentum late. Pelegrin Vargas hit back-to-back kills to tie the score at 15. Lewis went on another run to advance their lead to three. Frederico Santos tallied nine assists and the Mastodons were right behind the Flyers in kills 12-11 for the set.
Set Three
Purdue Fort Wayne's defense kicked in and recorded 4.5 team blocks compared to the Flyers' 3.5 team blocks. Rico Wardlow and Santos began set three with a block and Wardlow had a kill shortly after, tying the score at two. Wardlow had a solo block against the 6-foot-11 Tyler Mitchem on the Lewis side. Lewis went on a 4-2 push late to take the set.
