Mastodons Drop a Pair of Games on Opening Day
2/7/2020 9:02:00 PM | Softball
GAME 1
In the opener, Jacksonville State got the scoring started in the second inning, to which Purdue Fort Wayne responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Madeline Swart singled up the middle to knock in Lexi Smalarz and Brooke Imel. Morganne Denny did the same, scoring Mariah Grant, then Alaina White singled to shortstop to bring home Swart.
The Mastodon bats would cool off for a little while, as Jacksonville State tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Two-run sixth and seventh innings for the Gamecocks gave them the lead that would be enough for the game, but Purdue Fort Wayne made it interesting down the stretch.
Olivia Stansbury singled to right field to score Imel in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the 'Dons within three. Denny followed suit with a double to right, bringing in Grant and Stansbury, but this would be the last run the Mastodons would tally.
The Mastodons finished the game with 12 hits, four more than Jacksonville State. Denny had three RBI to lead the team.
Lauren McConnell was credited with the loss to move to 0-1.
GAME 2
The sun came out for the second game, but the host team, Kennesaw State, was firing on all cylinders offensively.
The Owls tallied three runs in the first inning, scoring two on a single up the middle. One sacrifice fly later, and the Owls scored again. A run in the third inning by KSU's Brea Dickey was then matched in the fourth, as she knocked a triple to left field and recorded two RBI.
In the fifth, the Owls put a runner on first, then Cheyanne Sales went yard to end the game.
The 'Dons finished with four hits from four different players. Alyssa Malicki took the loss to go to 0-1.
Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 0-2. The Mastodons will play both Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State again tomorrow (Feb. 8), with JSU at noon and KSU at 2:30 p.m. ET.
