'Dons Hold Off Loyola For 3-0 Win

CHICAGO - The No. 10 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team took down Loyola Chicago 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 28-26) on Saturday (Feb. 8) in the Gentile Arena in the MIVA opener. This is the first time Purdue Fort Wayne has beaten Loyola since 2013 and the first time in three sets since 2007.
The Ramblers took the lead 2-0 in set one with a kill and a service ace, but Wilmer Hernandez was able to tie it up at three after an ace. The Ramblers took the lead once again, but the Mastodons held on to come back from a five point deficit and go into extra points. The 'Dons went on an 8-1 run that included two solo blocks from Richie Diedrich. The Mastodons held off a set point opportunity for Loyola as Pelegrin Vargas had a kill to even it at 15. Frederico Santos had a solo block and the 'Dons forced a Loyola attack error to win the set in extras.
In set two, the Mastodons took an early lead 4-2 after Vargas and Jon Diedrich each had a kill. It was back and forth as neither team won more than two in a row after 7-7. R. Diedrich closed out the set with a kill and the 'Dons took a 2-0 lead.
During set three, the Mastodons trailed early, but a four-point scoring run gave Purdue Fort Wayne a 10-8 lead. Vargas had two kills in the run while J. Diedrich contributed one. It took two straight kills from Vargas to end the match, as he closed it out with a kill down the middle of Loyola's block.
Vargas tallied 19 kills, while Gago collected 10 and J. Diedrich had eight. Hernandez totaled a career-high six digs, two aces and three blocks. Santos had 39 assists and four digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne extends their record to 6-2, 1-0 MIVA and Loyola falls to 3-8, 0-1 MIVA. The Mastodons will remain on the road as they take on Lindenwood on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 8 p.m. ET and Quincy on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 8 p.m. ET.
