7/20/2020 12:00:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
As Purdue Fort Wayne prepares for its first year in the Horizon League, we wanted to give the fans a quick briefing of each sport in which the Mastodons will be competing for a League championship. Today, women's cross country.
Who: All 12 Horizon League schools sponsor women's cross country.
Last Five Champions:
2019: Oakland
2018: Milwaukee
2017: Oakland
2016: Oakland
2015: Oakland
Championships by School: Butler 12, Loyola 6, Notre Dame 4, Oakland 4, Dayton 2, Detroit Mercy 2, Youngstown State 2, Milwaukee 1.
How Is a Champion Determined?: While the 2020 championship format has yet to be announced, Northern Kentucky hosted the 2019 Horizon League Cross Country Championships at the Valhalla Cross Country Course. Every team runs at the meet with all their runners and the team with the least amount of points wins.
One Memorable Mastodon Performance: Julia Jeszensky took third at the Oakland Invitational in 2012, finishing ahead of several foes from Oakland and Detroit Mercy.
Know Your Foes: The Mastodons competed against Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, IUPUI, Milwaukee, Oakland, UIC, Wright State and Youngstown State at least once in 2019.
One Random Note: Oakland has had the Athlete of the Year in each of the last four seasons, with Maggie Schneider earning the last three. She has one more year of eligibility with a chance to earn the honor all four years.
And Now For Something Completely Different: The Horizon League does not recognize a Newcomer of the Championship, an award that the Summit League did award. However, the Horizon does award a Freshman of the Year.
