'Dons Defeat Cleveland State 3-1 For Pink Out Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a balanced attack, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team defeated Cleveland State on Tuesday (Oct. 12) with a 3-1 final score (25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 25-18) at the Gates Sports Center.
Purdue Fort Wayne celebrated Pink Out to support breast cancer research. It was the department's 15th annual celebration.
With four sets played on Tuesday, Katie Crowe became the all-time leader in program history in career sets played with 489. She passed Hall of Famer Andi Reichhart, who played in 488 sets from 1994-1997.
In the opening set, the Mastodons used a mini-run after mini-run to take a comfortable lead. Coming out of a timeout up 20-19, the 'Dons went on a 5-3 closing push that was capped off by a Ramei Jackson kill. The 'Dons went to Crowe and Jackson often with success in set one, as the pair combined for 10 kills on 15 errorless attempts.
Cleveland State took set two behind a .323 hitting percentage. The Vikings got five kills from Erica Kostelac, who finished with 17 kills, tying her teammate Peyton Bloomer for the match-high.
Purdue Fort Wayne used an 8-2 run in set three to take a 17-13 lead. This run featured kills from Sidney Schiller, Madelyn Wurster, Jackson and Crowe, with a block from Molly Mirabelli and Wurster. After Cleveland State took a 23-22 edge, the 'Dons took the set thanks to a 4-1 finishing run. Mirabelli started it off with a kill and a block, then Maggie Castleman got a kill to put it on ice.
Set four was all Mastodons, as they hitting a scorching .478 to best Cleveland State's .304. Jackson had five kills, Crowe had three, Wurster had three, and Mirabelli had one to total 12 kills on just 13 swings among those players. The 'Dons had a 9-2 run to take a 13-9 lead that featured an ace from Rachael Crucis. A 3-0 run later on had an ace from Schiller, then Alexandra Traciak aced Sarah DeGeorge to take the match.
Crowe finished with a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Crucis had 17 digs to lead the match and Mirabelli had a match-high seven blocks. As a team, the 'Dons had 13 blocks, their second-most of the season.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 5-17, 3-6 Horizon League, while Cleveland State falls to 6-13, 4-4. The 'Dons will hit the road for one more match this week, a Friday night clash with IUPUI in Indianapolis.
