Purdue Fort Wayne WBB Heads to SIUE on Sunday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team will take the floor at SIUE on Sunday for their third non-league game of the 2021-22 season.

Know Your Foe
SIUE is 2-2 this season with its losses coming on the road at Kansas and Memphis to open the season but the Cougars are riding a two-game winning streak coming into this game. The Cougars beat Big Ten foe Illinois 71-62 and Butler 87-74. SIUE has three players scoring in double-figures in Ajulu Thatha, Gabby Nikitinaite and Mikayla Kinnard. Thatha is shooting 46.2 percent from the floor for her 11.0 points per game, leading SIUE in both categories.

SIUE has a 13-9 edge in the all-time series including 6-5 advantage when the two teams were in the GLVC together. The Cougars took the last game 66-50 in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons' last win came in 2013 which saw Arianna Simmons score 22 points to lead the 'Dons to a 96-71 win.

Purdue Fort Wayne has the ninth-fewest turnovers in the country with 43. Southern Illinois is leading the country in that category with just 26.

In the Horizon League, the Mastodons are ranked first in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.16), assists per game (16.7), field goal percentage (48.1 percent), rebound margin (6.0), scoring average (80.7), steals per game (12.3), 3-point field goals per game (10.7), 3-point percentage (43.2 percent), turnover margin (7.67) and turnovers forced (22.0).
Double-Double Machine
With two-straight double-doubles against UIC and Evansville, Shayla Sellers was the first Mastodon to record two in a row since Sh'Toya Sanders in February 2020. Sellers is one of three players in the Horizon League with two double-doubles this season.
Spectacular Shayla
Shayla Sellers has the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation. She has dished out nine assists while only committing one turnover in 33 minutes per game.
Shayla's Career Night
Shayla Sellers had her best performance as a Mastodon against UIC on November 18. She scored 23 and grabbed 11 rebounds, both career-highs, while shooting 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the floor, 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the fre. Sellers had only three points and three rebounds at halftime, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight boards after the intermission.
Double-Double Trouble
In the Mastodons' 69-63 win over UIC, Purdue Fort Wayne got double-doubles out of Shayla Sellers and Ryin Ott. Sellers had career-highs in both points and rebounds with 23 and 11. Ott went for 14 points and 10 rebounds, the latter of which was a career-high.
In a League of Their Own
Purdue Fort Wayne has three of the top 10 scorers in the Horizon League: Sylare Starks (17.3 ppg), Shayla Sellers (14.7 ppg) and Ryin Ott (14.3 ppg). Purdue Fort Wayne is the only team in the League to have three scorers in the top 10.
Perfect From the Line
Aubrey Stupp is the only player in the Horizon League with a perfect free throw percentage with at least 2.5 made free throws per game. Stupp is 10-for-10, and is one of 13 players in the country that meet those criteria.
3 and Oh So Nice
Maria Marchesano became the second coach in Mastodon women's basketball history to start 3-0 in their career. Kirk Kavanaugh, who coached the Mastodons from 1982-85, started his career 4-0. This opening four games included a 71-66 overtime win over Indiana Tech, where he was 32-10 as the head coach from 1980-82.

Ryin Ott was selected as the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the second time in as many weeks on Monday, November 22. Ott helped lead the Mastodons to a 69-63 win over UIC by registering a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Through two weeks of action, Ott averaged 15.0 points per game, more than double of any other freshman in the league. This ranked eighth in the league among all players.
Last Time Out
Sylare Starks had career-highs with 23 points and seven rebounds in an 84-71 loss to Evansville. Shayla Sellers recorded her second-straight double-double.
