CHICAGO - Behind 17 kills from both Pelegrin Vargas and Vicente Ibarra, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up its third MIVA win of the year with a 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23) victory over No. 15 Loyola Chicago on Thursday (Feb. 25).
Vargas and Ibarra both had 33 swings for the match and both hit over .300. Vargas finished at .394 and Ibarra hit .303.
The Mastodons fell behind 7-4 early, but evened it up after three in a row. This trend would continue, as the 'Dons trailed by at least three in every set. The Ramblers got the first set all the way to 24-22, but the Mastodons held off two set points. After icing the server, the 'Dons got a block from Ibarra and Rico Wardlow on the right side. Vargas got an ace, then Ibarra got the set-winning kill.
The second set favored Loyola for the duration, as the Ramblers never trailed.
Purdue Fort Wayne's offense came to life in the third, but not before starting down 3-0. The 'Dons went on a 10-2 run, midway through and closed the frame getting 13-of-16. They hit a ridiculous .556 in the third set.
In the fourth, the Ramblers led 11-7 before the Mastodons rattled off six in a row. They went to Ibarra for two kills and got a block from him and Richie Diedrich. Tied at 23 later on, the Mastodons found their All-American Vargas for a kill from the left, then won the match on a hitting error by Loyola. Vargas had seven of his kills in the last set.
Diedrich finished with eight kills and four blocks. Bryce Walker and Ibarra had five blocks each. Frederico Santos paced the offense with 43 assists and led defensively with eight digs. Vargas and Troy Gooch both dug out six balls.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 3-4, 3-4 MIVA, while Loyola drops to 8-3, 4-3 MIVA. The Mastodons and Ramblers will meet again on March 12, but in the Gates Sports Center.
