The Loyola Chicago Ramblers are coming to Purdue Fort Wayne after falling to the Mastodons 3-1 on February 25. The Ramblers have numerous statistical leaders in the MIVA heading into Friday's match. Cole Schlothauer is fourth in the conference in kills per set with 3.81 and second in hitting percentage with .333 hitting. Garrett Zolg leads the MIVA in service aces per set and is recording 0.55 per set. He also is fourth in the conference in assists per set with 9.93, right behind Purdue Fort Wayne's Frederico Santos. Luke Denton has claimed the number three spot in kills with 133 thus far.
LONG TIME, NO SEE
The Mastodons and Ramblers last saw each other on February 25 at the Alfie Norville Practice Facility in Chicago where the 'Dons took home a 3-1 victory. Pelegrin Vargas and Vicente Ibarra both had 33 swings and 17 kills for the match and both hit over .300. Vargas finished at .394 and Ibarra hit .303. Richie Diedrich finished with eight kills and four blocks. Bryce Walker and Ibarra had five blocks each. Frederico Santos paced the offense with 43 assists and led defensively with eight digs. Vargas and Troy Gooch both dug out six balls.
STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
After the first seven matches of the 2021 season, Vicente Ibarra has already recorded 92 kills and is hitting .307. The Chile native had a successful weekend against No. 4 Lewis despite the 'Dons falling both nights. Ibarra had a career-high 21 kills on Friday (Feb. 19) and then recorded 22 kills the next night.
'DONS TURN 40!
The 2021 season will mark the Mastodons 40th season since becoming a varsity program at Purdue Fort Wayne. In 1978, Arnie Ball and three students jump started the program as a club team and it wasn't until 1981 when it became an official varsity team. Ball was not only the coach, but he was also the sport information director, administrator overseeing the athletic training staff and the intramural program as well the coach for the women's volleyball team. Within the span of 40 years, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball has earned five MIVA tournament titles, three regular season titles and tied for first five times and went to the NCAA tournament numerous times.
ELITE MASTODONS
The Mastodons have been stellar against opponents outside of the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll since April 1, 2017. The 'Dons are 41-7 against unranked teams
since that date.
BACK FOR MORE
Pelegrin Vargas and Richie Diedrich returned to Purdue Fort Wayne to finish out their senior season. The Mastodons have maintained almost all of their roster for the previous season as well as adding three new freshmen.
