Merida Earns 10th on Day One of Gibson Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The first day of the Gibson Invitational on Thursday (April 15) featured five events of the decathlon. Purdue Fort Wayne freshman Elijah Merida is in 10th place overall with 3,176 points. Logan Alexander is currently in 15th with 2,723 and Conner Bayne is in 17th with 2,313.
Day one started with the 100 meter dash and Merida clocked a time of 11.36 and finished in 11th. Alexander came in 14th (11.59) and Bayne rounded out the Mastodons in 19th (12.68).
Merida jumped to a mark of 6.30m in the long jump, concluding the event in eighth place. With a mark of 5.47m, Alexander placed 18th and Bayne had a mark of 4.77m, coming in 19th.
Next up was shot put and Bayne led the way in 10th, throwing to a mark of 10.01m. Right behind him was Merida in 11th (9.75m) and Alexander was in 18th (7.44m).
Leading in the high jump in was Alexander with a mark of 1.75m, placing 14th overall. Merida tied for 15th and jumped to a mark of 1.72m. Bayne finished in 18th with a mark of 1.54m.
The last event for the day was the 400 meter dash. Merida recorded a time of 52.31 (ninth), Alexander had a time of 55.07 (16th) and Bayne finished with a time of 56.33 (17th).
Day two of competition at the Gibson Track and Field Complex at Indiana State will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday (April 16) with the 110 meter hurdles in the men's decathlon.
