CHICAGO – The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team saw a pair of contests go to the homestanding UIC Flames on Saturday (April 17) at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood. The Mastodons fell in game one 2-0 and game two 4-2.
Game One – Flames 2, Mastodons 0 (scheduled seven inning game)
Jacob Myer was strong once again. He allowed just two runs in 6.0 innings of work.
The Mastodon offense was done in by three untimely double plays. Aaron Chapman singled and then Garett Lake walked to start the fourth. But a failed sacrifice bunt and a double play ended the inning. Jack Lang opened the sixth with a single before a double play ended the threat. In the seventh, Trenton Stoner singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. However, another double play followed to end the game. The contest was played in an hour and 25 minutes.
Myer picked up the loss. He lowered his ERA to 3.21 on the season but now has a 2-3 record on the season.
UIC starter Ryan O'Reilly threw six shutout frames. He gave way to Joey Morris who picked up the save.
The Flames scored single runs in the second and third to round out the scoring. Joshua Figueroa and Cory Moore both had an RBI single for the Flames.
Game Two – Flames 4, Mastodons 2
The 'Dons led 2-0 after an inning and a half as the 'Dons scored single runs in each of their first two times at bat. Chapman had an RBI groundout in the first and Dylan Stewart pushed a run home on a fielder's choice in the second.
UIC scored all four of their runs on home runs. Cole Conn hit a three-run home run in the third to put UIC in the lead 3-2. They extended their lead to 4-2 with a solo shot by Figueroa in the seventh.
The 'Dons had chances to tie the game or take the lead. In the seventh the 'Dons stranded runners at the corners. In the eighth, Ryan Robison came up with runners on first and second and two outs. Trenton Stoner and Zac Baden swiped bags during the 10-pitch at-bat that ended in a strikeout. Baden had the tying runs on base in the ninth, but struck out to end the game.
