'Dons Go Extras in Game One, Take Series Finale From Robert Morris
4/3/2021 6:40:00 PM | Softball
Game 1 - Mastodons 3, Colonials 4
Seven innings was not enough to determine a winner in the third game of the series, as Rachel Everson hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it at three. The game went on for another two innings after this point.
After RMU took the lead in the top of the ninth, Kyndell Ethridge doubled down the left field line, then advanced to third after Morganne Denny's sacrifice bunt. The Colonials held Ethridge at third to escape with the win.
RMU opened the game with three runs in the top of the first after the first three batters were walked. The 'Dons cut into the deficit in the third inning with a pair of runs. Madeline Swart tripled to bring Meagan Mullaney home, then Swart advanced home to score on an error by the left fielder. This was the Colonials' only error of the game.
Lauren McConnell got the start for the 'Dons and thew six innings. Shaina Eyre entered the game in the seventh, but took the loss to fall to 3-7. Rachael Rhinehart for RMU got the win in two innings of work to improve to 5-2.
Game 2 - Mastodons 9, Colonials 5
The difference in game two came in the third and fourth innings, which featured the Mastodons putting a pair of crooked numbers on the scoreboard. The 'Dons scored five in the third and four in the fourth.
RMU scored one in the third, but the 'Dons responded quickly. Ethridge doubled to score Swart, then Denny drew a walk, then Alise Hale singled up the middle to load the bases. Everson brought Ethridge home on a sacrifice fly to right, but Emma McMillan loaded the bases again by drawing a walk. The floodgates opened in the next at bat, when Mullaney singled to score Denny and Hale. McMillan scored on a throwing error from second base. This was the fifth run of the frame.
In the fourth inning, Ethridge scored again when Denny blasted a home run over the center field wall. Two more runs would score thanks to another bases loaded scenario. Hale scored on a wild pitch, then Everson scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 9-3.
RMU got two runs in the sixth, but the Mastodons lead had ballooned to too big of a margin. The 'Dons stranded 14 runners on base in the contest, including three in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth.
Eyre pitched all seven innings to move to 4-7. Madison Riggle took the loss for RMU to fall to 4-3.
With the split, Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 5-15, 4-12 Horizon League while Robert Morris moves to 16-10, 11-7 Horizon. The Mastodons have a midweek doubleheader at Green Bay on Tuesday starting at 1 p.m. ET. The Phoenix are 9-9 in league play but are riding a four-game losing streak.
