Swart Doubles Three Times in Doubleheader at Green Bay
4/6/2021 6:33:00 PM | Softball
Swart finished her day going 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot.
Game 1 - Mastodons 4, Phoenix 12
The Mastodons hit two home runs in the opening game against the Phoenix, but Green Bay used two big innings to put the game out of reach.
Alise Hale and Lexi Smalarz both hit lead off homers in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. This was the third and fourth runs the 'Dons scored. The first and second came in the third inning after Emma McMillan doubled, Smalarz singled, then Swart doubled down the right field line to score McMillan. On the next at bat, Kennedy Steele brought Smalarz home on a sacrifice fly.
Green Bay's four-run second and five-run fifth innings were the difference maker. The Phoenix also scored two in the third and one in the first.
Lauren McConnell (0-3) threw 3.0 innings and Jadelyn Johnson tossed 1.2 in relief. Kayla Schwebke got the win with a complete 5.0 innings pitched.
Game 2 - Mastodons 4, Phoenix 8
In the rematch, the 'Dons went up early on the Phoenix thanks to a run in the first inning. Swart doubled on the first at bat of the game, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Kennedy Steele.
Green Bay took the advantage with a two-run second inning and a four-run third before the Mastodons scored again.
The 'Dons chipped away at the lead the Phoenix had built with three one-run innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh, but they ran out of innings to come back.
In the fifth, Swart scored again after drawing a walk and being brought home by Ethridge's fielder's choice. One inning later, Swart picked up an RBI by singling Rachel Everson in. In the last inning, McMillan doubled after Morganne Denny doubled to get the fourth Mastodons' run of the game.
Shaina Eyre (4-8) threw all 6.0 innings with six strikeouts. Brittany Baneck threw 5.0 innings for the win to improve to 6-1.
The Mastodons drop to 5-17, 4-14 Horizon League while Green Bay improves to 16-12, 11-9. Purdue Fort Wayne will be back at home on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 with a four-game series. Both days will have doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
