Purdue Fort Wayne Sweeps Doubleheader With Green Bay
4/30/2021 6:38:00 PM | Softball
Game 1 - Mastodons 5, Phoenix 4
Green Bay took an early lead in the opening game of the series, but Purdue Fort Wayne answered with a pair of multi-run innings.
The Phoenix had a solo home run in the top of the second inning, but the Mastodons responded in the bottom of the third with a home run of their own. Theirs was a three-run variety, however. When she saw a change-up float into her strike zone, Morganne Denny homered to right field, bringing home Olivia Stansbury and Madeline Swart. Swart got on with a single to right and Stansbury drew a walk to set up the three-run bomb.
The Phoenix re-took the lead in the following inning with three runs. The scoring started with a solo home run and then continued when a double scored two more. This 4-3 score would hold until the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Alise Hale swung at the first pitch she was offered and sent it over the left field wall. Two batters later, Rachel Everson took just two pitches to send a home run over the right fielder's head. This would be the eventual game-winning run.
Green Bay had a chance to extend the contest in the seventh with two batters on and just one out. Jadin Justman smacked a line drive to Denny at first, who turned the double play all on her own to end the comeback bid.
Shaina Eyre (6-11) threw a complete seven-inning contest, picking up her sixth win of the year after tying her career-high with seven strikeouts. Green Bay's Kayla Schwebke took the loss (10-7) despite fanning nine Mastodons.
Game 2 - Mastodons 9, Phoenix 7
In game two, the Phoenix led early again, with another solo home run in the first inning.
The 'Dons responded to Green Bay's lead like in the first game. Madeline Swart singled to center field to score Meagan Mullaney and Everson in the third inning. From this point, the Mastodons never trailed.
Green Bay tied the game at two in the top of the fourth with another solo shot to right center, but the 'Dons had their chance in the fourth and exploded for six runs.
Stansbury got the bats going from the first at bat of the frame with a double to center field. Denny doubled to left, which scored Kennedy Steele who pinch ran for Stansbury. Kyndell Ethridge reached on an error and Everson drew a walked to juice the bases for Mullaney. A single up the middle scored two of the three, then Lexi Smalarz singled with a bunt to load the bases again. Swart doubled to left to score all three from there. This 8-2 lead would be enough to grind out the win, but Green Bay did not pack it in just yet.
The Phoenix had a four-run sixth, which featured a two-run homer and a two-RBI double.
For good measure, Everson scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, giving the 'Dons a three-run cushion heading into the seventh. Green Bay scored one in their last frame, but the 'Dons stranded three runners to end the game.
Jadelyn Johnson and Lauren McConnell split the pitching duties as Johnson threw 5.0 and McConnell tossed 2.0. Johnson struck out a career-high of six batters to pick up the win (3-5). Green Bay's Brittany Baneck took the loss to move to 8-3.
With the pair of Horizon League wins, the Mastodons improve to 10-21, 9-18 while Green Bay falls to 20-18, 15-15. These two teams will meet again tomorrow (Saturday, May 1) for two more games starting at 1 p.m. Approximately 15 minutes before first pitch, Purdue Fort Wayne will honor four seniors: Everson, Ethridge, Smalarz and Denny.
