
Aaron Martin in Third Place
Podium Finish and New Record Ends Day One

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's track and field team earned a podium finish, a new school record and two final qualifiers during the first day of competition at the 2021 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 7).
Aaron Martin earned a spot on the podium in the javelin with a mark of 53.13m, placing third overall. Martin is the first individual podium finisher in Purdue Fort Wayne men's track and field program history.
Andrew Whitinger reset his previous school record in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:03.16 and earned seventh place. Whitinger's time was 51 seconds faster than his previous record time of 31:54.58. Nicholas Mills finished the 10,000 meter run in 14th and clocked in a time of 32:07.40.
In the 1,500 meter run preliminaries, Husam Saleh came in second and recorded a time of 4:07.90 while Kehinde Oladapo placed 11th and ran a time of 4:02.71. Both Saleh and Oladapo will run in the 1,500 meter finals on Sunday (May 9) at 11:30 a.m.
Elijah Merida will head into the second and final day of the men's decathlon in second place with 3,132 points. Logan Alexander is currently in fifth with 2,942 points and Conner Bayne is in seventh with 2,271 points.
Martin led the Mastodons in the discus and finished in eighth place with a mark of 41.75m. Asher Walden was right behind Martin in ninth place and threw to 40.68m. Garrett Anglemeyer finished in 12th (38.66m) and Tony Ordway came in 14th (38.28m).
Currently, the Mastodons are in fourth place with nine points.
Purdue Fort Wayne will start day two on Saturday (May 8) at 9 a.m. beginning with the remainder of the men's decathlon.
