Men's Volleyball Falls to George Mason In Five Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell to George Mason in a five-set thriller (18-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 16-14) on Thursday, Jan. 20 on the Arnie Ball Court at the Gates Sports Center.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 2-2 overall. George Mason improves to 2-1 and pick up its first road win of the season.
The 'Dons would get off to a hot start hitting .379 as a team in the first set. Jon Diedrich had seven kills in the set. The Mastodons scored consecutive points seven times in the frame and failed to side out only once in the first.
After George Mason took a 15-14 lead in the second set, the 'Dons used an 11-5 run to close out the frame and win the set. The 'Dons received kills from Diedrich, Kade Bontrager and Carlos Mercado during the run. The Mastodons limited George Mason to a .000 hitting percentage in the set.
The Patriots would not go down without a fight. They would win the third set thanks to a 6-1 run to close the set out. The Patriots used that momentum to get off to an early 9-3 lead in the fourth set and would eventually force a fifth.
Neither team held a lead of more than two points in the fifth set. The 'Dons were the first to earn match point at 14-13, but the Patriots scored the final three points to win the match.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .306 compared to George Mason's .279. Over the last three sets, the Patriots hit for .477 percentage.
Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 26, which was a season high, and was two kills from tying his career high. Diedrich also hit .440 for the match.
Bontrager was the other Mastodon with double digit kills (11). Sean Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 41, and Troy Gooch led the 'Dons in digs with eight. Gooch also added four assists.
The Mastodons will play two road games this weekend. They travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan. 22 (4 p.m.). The following day, the 'Dons travel to Newark, N.J. to take on NJIT on Sunday, Jan. 23 (1 p.m.).
