Gooch, Mercado Rack Up Career High Digs In Win Over Terriers

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y.– Troy Gooch and Carlos Mercado both racked up career highs in digs as the Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team defeated St. Francis Brooklyn in four sets (25-11, 20-25, 25-12, 25-17) on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Mercado set a new career high in digs with 11, while Gooch matched his career high with 15. Thanks to their combined 26 digs, the Mastodons held the Terriers to a .019 hitting percentage. It is the lowest hitting percentage the 'Dons have held an opponent to since they held Urbana to a -.029 hitting percentage back on Feb. 7, 2020.
The 'Dons overall record improves to 3-2. Saturday was the Terriers' first match of the season.
In the first set, the Mastodons took a quick lead before the Terriers cut it to 7-6. The 'Dons finished the set with an 18-5 run. During the run, the 'Dons received five kills from Jon Diedrich, two kills each from Axel Meléndez Watts, Mercado, and a kill from Bryce Walker.
After dropping the second set, the 'Dons hit for .300 in sets three and four while holding the Terriers to just a .002 hitting percentage. The Mastodons got off to a 10-3 lead to start the third set and would not look back. The Mastodons used a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 lead in set four and cruised the rest of the way.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .193 for the match. Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills (16). Zach Solomon, in his first career start, earned 37 assists.
The Mastodons' road trip will conclude Sunday (Jan. 23) with a match against NJIT (1 p.m.) in Newark, N.J.
