Men's Volleyball Drops Five Set Match Against Saint Francis (PA)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match against Saint Francis (PA) in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 15-13) on Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Gates Sports Center on the Arnie Ball Court.
With the loss, the Mastodons overall record dropped to 4-4. The Red Flash picked up their second win of the season and improve to 2-4 overall.
After dropping the first two sets, 'Dons got off to a fast start in the third set, with a lead as large as 12-6. During that stretch, Jon Diedrich had three kills, Bryce Walker and Vicente Ibarra each had two kills. The early lead would help the 'Dons win the set.
The 'Dons got off to another fast start in the fourth set and led by as much as 10-5. The Red Flash did not go down without a fight, and chipped the 'Dons lead down to 23-22. The 'Dons scored two of the next three points off kills from Sean Califf and Ibarra to force a fifth set.
In the final set, neither team led by more than three points. After the 'Dons took an 11-10 lead, the Red Flash ended the set on a 5-2 run to win the match.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .215 and the Red Flash hit .194. The 'Dons committed 28 service errors while the Red Flash committed 21.
Diedrich and Ibarra led the 'Dons in kills with 16 each. Diedrich also led the 'Dons in digs with 11. The 16 kills and 11 digs gave Diedrich his first career double-double and the third double-double for the 'Dons over the last four matches.
Califf and Zach Solomon split time at setter. Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 28, Solomon added 19.
The Mastodons travel to the east coast next weekend for a pair of non-conference matches. The first match is on Friday, Feb. 4 (7 p.m.) against Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. The 'Dons will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 5 (7 p.m.).
