Mastodons Run Away With a Victory Over Pioneers

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up a non-conference road win against Sacred Heart in four sets (25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 25-21) on Friday, Feb. 4.
With the win, the Mastodons record improves to 5-4 overall. The Pioneers suffered their first loss of the season and are now 3-1.
The 'Dons found themselves down by as much as five in the first set. They would use a 15-3 run to take a commanding 18-11 lead, and eventually win the first set. During that run, Vicente Ibarra notched three aces, and received a kill from Jon Diedrich, Rico Wardlow, and Axel Melendez Watts. The 'Dons are now 4-1 in matches when they win the first set.
After the 'Dons won the second set 25-16, they found themselves trailing 18-14 in the third set. The 'Dons went on a 7-2 run to take a 21-20 lead. However, the Pioneers finished the set on a 6-3 run to extend the match.
In the fourth set, the Pioneers got off to an early 6-2 lead. The 'Dons responded with an 8-1 run to give themselves a 10-7 lead. In that run, the Diedrich earned two kills, while Ibarra notched another service ace. The Mastodons held the lead for the remainder of the match.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .241 for the match and held Sacred Heart to a .165 hitting percentage. The 'Dons also notched 11 aces to the Pioneers' six. This is the second time this season the 'Dons have had double-digit aces.
Jon Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 16 and digs with 10, while hit .303 on the night. This is the second-straight match Diedrich earned a double-double. Ibarra and Walker added four service aces each. Sean Califf paced the 'Dons with 35 assists.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 (5 p.m.) against Harvard in Cambridge, Mass.
