Mastodons Crowned Winners Against King In Season Opener

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team opened the season with a win over King in three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-20) on Friday, Jan. 7.
With the win, the 'Dons are 5-2 in season openers under head coach Ryan Perrotte and improve to 12-1 all-time (4-0 under Perrotte) against Conference Carolina schools.
In the first set, the 'Dons found themselves down 20-19. But thanks to a 6-2 run, they would close the set and keep momentum throughout the rest of the match. Jon Diedrich earned two kills and Bryce Walker added a kill during that stretch.
The 'Dons and Tornado would be knotted at 15-15 in the second set, and the 'Dons would once again close the set strong, this time with a 10-4 run. Mitch Geiger and Walker would lead the run with two kills each.
As a team, the 'Dons had a .403 hitting percentage, compared to the Tornado's .103 hitting percentage. Diedrich and Walker led the way with 12 kills each. Walker hit for a career high .714, while Diedrich had a .346 hitting percentage. Sean Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 36, and Troy Gooch led in digs with seven.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 8 (7 p.m.) for a match against Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tenn. Saturday will be the Railsplitters' first match of the season.
