Ninth-Inning Comeback Falls Short in 8-7 loss to Georgia State
2/20/2022 4:00:00 PM | Baseball
ATLANTA, Ga. - The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team scored three runs in the ninth inning to get within a run, but the late-game rally came up short and the Mastodons fell 8-7 to the Georgia State Panthers on Sunday (Feb. 20).
Freshman Braxton Wilson made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen and looked strong. He went three innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking one and striking out two. Junior Kyle Maurer, also making his Mastodon debut, put together two shutout innings out of the pen. Freshman Bryce Martens (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Jack Lang led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, two walks and four RBIs. Alex Evenson put together a nice day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mastodons got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. It came on an RBI single from Evenson, scoring Lang from third base.
The Panthers then tied the ballgame at one before the Mastodons came back to reclaim their advantage in the second inning. Purdue Fort Wayne scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Garett Lake, which brought the Purdue Fort Wayne lead to 2-1.
Purdue Fort Wayne's lead had disappeared once the fourth inning came around at a 5-2 Georgia State advantage, when the Mastodons cut that deficit to 5-4. The 'Dons notched two runs when a single from Lang scored newcomers Dalton Madsen and Cade Fitzpatrick.
The Panthers expanded their lead to 8-4 before Purdue Fort Wayne rally in the ninth. The three-run frame for the Mastodons was highlighted by a bases loaded double by Lang. It put runners at second and third with no outs. A Lake RBI ground out make it a one-run game, but the 'Dons couldn't get the tying run home.
Georgia State improves to 4-0. The 'Dons fall to 0-4.
