ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland and Purdue Fort Wayne split Friday's (March 25) doubleheader with identical 10-2 scores. The Mastodons won the opener before Oakland won the nightcap.
GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 10, Oakland 2
Purdue Fort Wayne received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Mastodons put 10 runs on the board and knock off the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in the opener.
Freshman Rex Stills (1-2) started on the mound and picked up the win for Purdue Fort Wayne. The right-hander went his three scheduled innings, giving up no runs, three hits, two walks and striking out three. Jacob Myer threw the final innings, also not allowing a run. He finished with a line of three hits, one walk and one strikeout.
Brian Erbe led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 3-for-5 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBIs. Junior Ben Higgins was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two walks and an RBI.
The Mastodons got on the board immediately, scoring a pair in the top of the first inning. Cade Fitzpatrick and Garett Lake each had an RBI in the frame.
The Golden Grizzlies failed to push any runs across before the Mastodons offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Purdue Fort Wayne scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Jack Lang, which brought the Mastodons' lead to 3-0.
The 'Dons made it 7-0 with four runs in the fifth. Higgins started the scoring with a solo shot. Erbe later followed with a three-run home run.
The Golden Grizzlies closed the gap to 7-2 until Purdue Fort Wayne added some insurance in the eighth. Alex Evenson crossed home plate with the lone run of the eighth for the Mastodons, bringing the score to 8-2 in favor of Purdue Fort Wayne. Dylan Stewart added an RBI single in the ninth to put the game away at 10-2.

Garrett Maish had a pinch-hit home run for the 'Dons in a 10-2 loss. Maish's home run, his first career long ball, came in the ninth inning. The Mastodons' other run came in the seventh when Ryan Robison drove in Dalton Madsen.
Jarrett Bickel finished 2-for-4 with a double. Madsen had a double and a walk in addition to his run scored.
Six pitchers threw for the 'Dons. Bryce Martens suffered the loss. He is now 0-4 after starting and going an inning.
Oakland scored runs in each of the first five innings. Of their 11 hits in the game, only three were for extra bases. Oakland starting pitcher Brett Hagen (2-1) went all nine for the Golden Grizzlies.
