WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – The Mastodon baseball team put together a spirited comeback, scoring three runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 10-9 in 10 innings on Saturday (March 26) at Oakland.
The Mastodons were trailing 5-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Purdue Fort Wayne scored twice, with one run coming across on Cade Fitzpatrick's single.
Freshman Karter Hann's two-out RBI double in the sixth brought the score to 5-3.
The seventh saw the 'Dons take their first lead of the game. Fitzpatrick blasted a two-out home run that scored Jarrett Bickel and Jack Lang. It put the 'Dons up 6-5.
Oakland responded with three of their own in the seventh to go up 8-6. The 'Dons weren't done yet. The Mastodons scored three in the ninth, punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of freshman Luke Miles bringing the Purdue Fort Wayne advantage to 9-8.
However, Oakland tied it in the ninth and then won it in the 10th. Brandon Nigh hit a walk-off home run in the 10th for the Golden Grizzlies.
Fitzpatrick went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and four RBIs. Ben Higgins was 2-for-5 with a home run in the ninth inning. Bickel also helped out the Purdue Fort Wayne offense, putting together three hits in six trips to the plate.
The 'Dons used only two pitchers in the game. Mitchell Spencer settled down after a five-run first to go six innings. He fanned eight. Justin Miller threw in relief and took the loss. He is 0-6.
