Mastodons Fall to Bearcats in Four Sets

LEBANON, Ill. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match against McKendree in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16) on Saturday, March 26.
With the loss, the Mastodons' overall record drops to 13-10 and 4-6 in the MIVA. The Bearcats' overall record improves to 12-8 and 7-3 in the MIVA.
McKendree led by as much as 18-13 in the first set. After calling a timeout, the 'Dons made a late push, eventually tying the set at 24-24. Jon Diedrich, Rico Wardlow, and Vicente Ibarra earned kills during the stretch. Wardlow and Jacob Mailloux had block assists during the stretch as well. The Bearcats however scored the final two points to win the first set.
The Bearcats got out to another lead in the second set, this time leading by as much as 11-6. The 'Dons eventually tied the set at 18-18 and finished on a 12-7 run to win the second set. During the run, Diedrich had a service ace, and Wardlow finished the set with a kill.
In the third set, McKendree led by as much as 16-9. The 'Dons didn't go without a fight and eventually cut the Bearcat lead to 21-18. Diedrich had three kills, Ibarra, and Carlos Mercado also added kills. The Bearcats eventually won the set 25-21 and used the momentum to win the fourth set.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .170 compared to the Bearcats' .267. The 'Dons had 12 blocks compared to the Bearcats' six.
Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 13 and digs with 12. It's his third double-double of the season. Sean Califf and Zach Solomon split time at setter. Solomon led in assists with 22, Califf added 17.
The 'Dons return to the St. Louis area for a MIVA match against Quincy on Thursday, March 31 (8 p.m.) in Quincy, Ill.
