'Dons Defeat Quincy in Straight Sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association win against Quincy in straight sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-20) on Thursday, March 31.
With the win, the Mastodons' overall record improves to 14-10 and 5-6 in the MIVA. Quincy drops to 4-15 overall and 0-11 in the MIVA.
The 'Dons got off to a quick 9-3 lead to start the first set. Jon Diedrich had three kills in the run while Bryce Walker and Zach Solomon added kills. The Hawks closed the Mastodons' lead to 10-5, but the 'Dons finished the set on a 15-8 run.
Neither team led by more than three points to start the second set. With the set tied at 20-20, the 'Dons scored five of the final six points to secure the set win. Rico Wardlow had two kills in the run. Vicente Ibarra and Walker also added kills while Solomon also had a service ace in the final stretch.
After Quincy tied the third set at 8-8, the 'Dons went on a 10-5 run to take a 18-13 lead. The 'Dons had eight combined kills during the run. The Hawks stayed in the set and cut the Mastodon lead down to 23-20. However, the 'Dons scored the final two points of the set off a Wardlow kill and a Quincy attacking error.
The 'Dons hit .384 for the match, including .400 in the third set. Quincy hit .162. The Mastodons didn't give up an ace in the contest.
Diedrich led in kills with 13 and hit .370. Walker added 11 kills and hit .611 with no errors on 18 swings. Wardlow had eight kills and hit a match high .727 with no errors on 11 attempts. Solomon led in assists with 30. Troy Gooch led in digs with eight.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, April 2 (3 p.m.) against Lindenwood.
