Four Mastodons Record Multiple Hits in Game Two

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Four Purdue Fort Wayne softball players notched multiple hits, but the Mastodons fell to Marshall 8-0 and Winthrop Eagles 6-3 on Friday (March 4).
GAME 1 - Marshall 8, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Senior Shaina Eyre (0-3) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Offensively, the Mastodons were led by sophomore Brooke Wintlend, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Purdue Fort Wayne did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Mastodons went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the third, when Wintlend made it into scoring position with one out.
GAME NOTES
» Wintlend led the Mastodons at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double.
» Marshall was led offensively by senior Aly Harrell, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
» Joyce led the Thundering Herd pitching staff, throwing five shutout innings.
GAME 2 - Winthrop 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 3
Purdue Fort Wayne recorded a season-high nine hits against the Eagles. Taryn Jenkins led the hit barrage for the Mastodons, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame. Sophomore Brooke Wintlend provided a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs.
Jadelyn Johnson (0-3) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne (1-12). Lauren McConnell was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.2 shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mastodons were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Purdue Fort Wayne got an RBI single from Wintlend, scoring Taylor Warne from third base.
The Mastodons' deficit expanded to 6-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Freshman Brayden Lickey came across to score the lone run of the inning for Purdue Fort Wayne, which brought the score to 6-2 in favor of the Eagles.
Purdue Fort Wayne kept the Eagles off the board before narrowing the gap to 6-3 in the seventh. The Mastodons recorded a run on Wintlend's one-out solo home run off freshman Reese Basinger.
