Mastodons Drop a Pair at Thundering Herd Round Robin

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped two games on the final day of the Thundering Herd Round Robin on Saturday (March 5).
GAME 1 - Winthrop 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
Brooke Wintlend went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI for the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons in a 6-1 loss to the Winthrop Eagles.
Freshman Gracie Brinkerhoff (1-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne. Senior Lauren McConnell went for three shutout innings in relief, walking none and striking out three.
Alise Hale went 1-for-3 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 6-0, the Mastodons first put a run on the board in the seventh inning. Wintlend scored for Purdue Fort Wayne with a one-out solo home run off freshman Sydney Boulware. The Mastodons were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
GAME NOTES
» Wintlend led the Mastodons at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI.
» Winthrop was led offensively by junior Paige Rivas, who went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.
» Boulware led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.
GAME 2 - Maryland Eastern Shore 9, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Purdue Fort Wayne was not able to score against Maryland Eastern Shore pitcher Nasya Goodman and was shut out 9-0 by the Hawks.
Senior Shaina Eyre (0-3) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne (1-14).
In the batter's box, the Mastodons were led by junior Sonia Solis, who went 2-for-2 on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Purdue Fort Wayne managed to get five runners in scoring position, but they were all left on base. The Mastodons last got a runner on third in the fourth, when Hale made it 60 feet from scoring with two outs.
GAME NOTES
» Solis led the Mastodons at the plate, going 2-for-2.
» Maryland-Eastern Shore was led offensively by sophomore Julia Garcia, who went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
» Goodman led the Lady Hawks pitching staff, throwing six scoreless innings.
UP NEXT
Purdue Fort Wayne will open up Horizon League play on Friday (March 11) when UIC comes to town for the Flames' final time as Horizon League members. The two squads will play one game on Friday at 3 p.m. and two on Saturday starting at noon.
